Liz Cauthen

meet your friendly neighborhood luthier.

Hi. I’m Liz. I’m the leading lady luthier at Elizabeth Guitar Co.

I run this show with my counterpart, Matt. We met at Galloup School of Luthiery in 2018, which turned out to be real lucky for both of us. We were each at a time in our lives where we needed a drastic change of direction. And so this fortuitous meeting happened; I came back to Montana with Matt and we opened up shop for fretted instrument repair later that year with Matt’s business, M. Dickie Guitars.

After a while (and after a tumultuous pandemic year) we realized that we had enough room and, more importantly, enough mental capacity to take on my own big career goal of creating my own guitar building company. It’s in the name - these guitars are hand built by just the two of us here in our shop. My emphasis is on creating highest-quality handmade instruments for all types of players, at prices that don’t make your eyes bleed. I’m also committing to focus on finding sustainable and ethical sources for woods, with the ultimate hope that our work can help shift some perspectives that the only good tonewoods are exotic.

We are grateful to the luthier community that we have been welcomed by, and to our local community here in Bozeman for keeping us on our feet.
